Top 10 questions to ask a trucking recruiter
Ask Canadian trucking recruiters about miles, pay structure, detention, home time, and equipment before you accept an offer.
A recruiter’s job is to fill a seat. Your job is to leave the call knowing how you get paid, when you get home, and what happens when freight dies. Use these questions with every Canadian carrier — local Ontario or long-haul.
Pay and miles
- Is pay hourly, CPM, or a mix — and what is the real average weekly take-home after deductions?
- How are loaded miles, empty miles, and border waits paid?
- Do you pay detention, layover, and breakdown time? After how many hours?
- When is settlement, and what do drivers say about pay on time on TruckHire?
Home time, dispatch, and safety
- Is this local (home daily), regional, or OTR — in writing?
- Who dispatches, and what happens if a load will break hours?
- Average age of trucks and trailers on this fleet?
- How are accidents and CVOR/NSC issues handled?
- Can I speak with a driver who started in the last six months?
- Which terminal would I report to — Toronto, Brampton, or elsewhere?
Check the answers against reviews
If recruiting says “home weekends” but TruckHire home-time scores are low, believe the reviews. Compare two offers on miles, detention, and benefits — not just the CPM number.
